Buying a business
“I always came away understanding everything I needed to and with all my questions answered."
What is your main reason for buying a business? We suspect it probably is not because you have always wanted to spend hours in a solicitor’s office poring over lengthy documents written in legalese and listening to lawyers debating whether ‘shall’ means the same as ‘will’.
More likely, you want to get into the business as quickly as possible, with the minimum of fuss, so that you can start running it and seeing the profits.
So when you instruct us, we see it as our job to work out what you want to achieve and then get on with it. Of course, we need to ensure that you are properly protected and that you understand any risks. Where appropriate, we will fight your corner – but not create arguments for the sake of it. We will work with you and your other advisers in the way that best suits you, to make sure that you always know what is going on.
We will give you the same level of service whether you are buying a small business for the first time, are involved in a complex MBO or MBI, or are an experienced corporate purchaser looking to expand. We recognise the demands which will be placed on your time – part of our role is to help you make best use of it.
Where possible we will agree a fixed fee for the work. If we cannot do that, we will give our best estimate and consult with you if it looks like it may have to change. We are happy to meet with you initially, without commitment, to discuss the proposed deal and what it might cost – in fact the sooner you start talking to us about a transaction, the better we will understand it. Within our team we have experience of all kinds of transactions, from small asset purchases to multi-million pound share acquisitions, so we can often provide an alternative view on difficult issues.
And of course if you do want to spend hours poring over legal documents and debating the meaning of words, we can arrange that too (but we would rather not).
