Making your will

There’s no getting away from it – making a Will is an irksome task! Yes, we know we all have to die some day and having a Will is a thoroughly good idea and all that, but it’s unpleasant to have to confront one’s mortality and anyway it’s not going to happen just yet so it can wait until another day!

As Isaac Asimov wrote ‘Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It’s the transition that’s troublesome!’

At Gardner Leader we understand all this, so that when you have finally decided to get around to getting some decent advice about doing a Will we hope you will consider giving us a call. We aim to make the process as painless and straightforward as possible and once it’s done you can feel rightfully smug in the knowledge that you have joined the one-third of the UK population to do your nearest and dearest a favour so that if disaster strikes you have at least left your affairs in order.

And don’t think for one minute that there is no point in making a Will because everything will go to the spouse anyway. The rules of intestacy can work in strange and mysterious ways and they are not to be trusted!

If you among those one third already congratulations but when did you last read it!? Has anything happened since which might cause you to reconsider any part of it? Remember that marriage revokes a Will. Divorce affects the gift to the ex spouse but separation does not. Are the executors still appropriate? How has the value of your estate changed over the years and is the Will dealing with the Inheritance Tax problem? Gifts to minors need to be reconsidered in the light of the Finance Act 2006 changes.

We are happy to take on the role of executors and trustees if you think that would help.

If you have read this far you may as well download our Will Questionnaire and fill in and email it back to us. Have a look at our page about tax planning too.

We offer registration of the location of your Will on Certainty, the national will register.
