The Times: Divorces have risen at their sharpest rate in almost 50 years


Stephanie Buckeridge, Senior Associate in our Family Team was mentioned in The Times discussing the ONS (Office for National Statistics) divorce data report for 2020.

The article discusses how the data suggests a sharp rise in divorce compared to the 2019 report, with lockdown being a main benefactor.

The ONS said that the significant increase in divorce generally was in part attributed to divorce centres processing a backlog of casework that had built up in the previous year. It added that the rise was the largest in percentage terms since 1972, after the introduction of the Divorce Reform Act 1969.

She mentions how lockdown has caused “untold pressure on family dynamics which in many instances the relationships have been unable to survive”.
