Joining Gardner Leader – The Role of a Litigation Paralegal

A key factor that sparked my interest in a career in litigation is the diverse range of cases it covers. Since joining Gardner Leader as a litigation paralegal, I have certainly experienced this. In just a matter of weeks I have been given the opportunity to assist with a variety of cases, no two of which are comparable. This has allowed me to build upon my knowledge and gain confidence in my work far quicker than I would have expected to.

During my first week at Gardner Leader, I was provided with two days of in depth IT training. Although I was keen to get to grips with legal work, this was the platform I needed to get started. It gave me essential knowledge of the firm’s software and an understanding of how it can assist in daily tasks. During this time, I was also personally introduced to everyone at the firm. Thankfully, I was reassured that I was not expected to learn everyone’s names just yet!

After my initial induction, I joined the dispute resolution team. I got settled at my desk and almost immediately, I was given my first client. Although this was slightly daunting, I was supported through every stage of the process. Each member of the department made me feel welcome and told me they were happy to help with anything I may need. I quickly learnt that there is no such thing as a stupid question and found that I was settling in to my role in no time.

Now six weeks since joining Gardner Leader, I have settled my first case by obtaining full recovery of a debt for a client. I have also prepared court bundles, drafted witness statements and spent time reviewing files to ensure I am up to date with the latest events. The independence I have been given in my work paired with the consistent support I continue to receive has been invaluable. I am now familiar with my role as a litigation paralegal and feel confident assisting in a variety of cases. In particular, I have discovered a specific interest in contested probate and I am currently working on a number of these cases. As I have the opportunity to work on such a range of cases, I look forward to exploring further areas of litigation in depth.

Gardner Leader understands the importance of approachability and effectively puts this into practice. The firm provides a supportive working environment which encourages development and subsequently produces excellent results for clients. Gardner Leader has also encouraged my participation in events outside the immediate workspace, such as social events and charity events. Such activities make it easier for new employees such as myself to get to know other members of the firm and feel a part of the team. I attended the office summer party and after work drinks shortly after I joined, both of which helped me get to know my colleagues. I have also joined the Corporate Social Responsibility group and will be helping to organise a charity quiz in the upcoming months.

My first few weeks in the dispute resolution team have been fast-paced, interesting and very rewarding. I have already learnt a lot and quickly settled into the team. I am looking forward to continuing my development here at Gardner Leader and getting involved in a vast range of litigation cases.
