The rules and regulations surrounding self-isolation, reporting and the obligations of employers continue to evolve regularly.
Employers based in England need to be aware of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, restrictions)(Self-isolation) (England) Regulations 2020 that came into force on 27 September 2020 – full regulations here.
The new regulations include powers to issue fines starting from £1,000 to £10,000.
The key requirements for employers are summarised below:
i) Employees have an obligation to tell their employer where they have been notified of a requirement to self-isolate (and they are required to leave home to work).
ii) It is an offence for an employer to then require an employee to attend any location while they are self-isolating (or anyone in their household is self-isolating).
iii) Clarity that individuals breaching the self-isolation requirements will commit a criminal offence.
